Tenuta Scerscé
Cristina Scarpellini is the woman who today leads, with determination and creativity, this winemaking reality in Tirano, deeply rooted in the Valtellina territory. Professionally destined for a legal career, Cristina first specializes in international law, then falls in love with the Nebbiolo in the Valtellina land and her destiny suddenly changes course. Initially conceived as a hobby, it soon becomes a vital and fulfilling necessity: Cristina dedicates her soul and body to this project, guiding its commercial growth and personally overseeing its production.
Scerscé is certainly not a name chosen at random: the “sciarscél” is the traditional two-pronged hoe, commonly used in the vineyard for small targeted interventions around the vine and roots. The great strength of Valtellina, as a winemaking area, has been to invest in the landscape and environmental value of the territory, overcoming the natural landscape difficulties in a virtuous and innovative manner. It is no coincidence that this land is remembered by everyone for the so-called ‘heroic viticulture’, practiced on the terraces arranged on the steep and sinuous slopes of the valley. Tenuta Scerscé is rooted in this evocative landscape context with currently 6 hectares of vineyard between 550 and 750 meters above sea level in the municipality of Teglio in the Retiche Valtellinesi Alps.
Needless to say: here the principal grape variety is the Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca, and cultivated using Sylvoz for the older plants and Guyot for the younger ones, which in this area manages to give rise to pure and austere expressions, different and singular, yet equally fascinating as those from Piemonte. It is essentially the soils, here sandy, that make the soul of these Nebbioli unique. The labels are elegant and sober, the chosen bottles are the classic burgundy ones and the content is distinguished by elegant structure and tasting depth. Nettare, Essenza, Infinito, are the names of the three labels from Tenuta Scerscé, which describe with one word their characteristic trait: respectively drinkability, finesse, and complexity. The Chiavennasca by Cristina Scarpellini today presents itself as one of the most convincing responses of the feminine spirit of Valtellina.
