Tenute Moganazzi
You cannot go to Sicily without visiting Etna, the largest and most spectacular volcano in Europe, but also the most active and threatening. From its over 3,300 meters in altitude, an impressive amount of products are cultivated, such as pistachios, strawberries, apples, various vegetables, and last but not least, grapes. Spectacular, ancient, bush-trained and ungrafted, the vines are cultivated on scenic terraces at the foot of the great volcano, at altitudes exceeding 1000 meters, where the heat of the lava contrasts with the cold of the snow. The wines produced take their names from the bizarre districts where they grow: Chiappemacine, Linguaglossa, Trecastagni, and Passopisciaro. It is in the latter that the winery Tenute Moganazzi was founded by Don Michele Pennisi in Randazzo.
Don Michele is a doctor and cardiologist who has always nurtured a passion for the world of wine. Captivated by the beauty of the vineyards on the volcano, in 1994 he decided to produce his first bottles for friends and acquaintances, putting all his passion, courage, and love into it. The production is carried on by his son Vincenzo who in 2006 formalized the name of the winery, putting on each label the name of the one who brought the project to life, Don Michele, and marketing the wine outside the region. In 2012, after Vincenzo's passing, the siblings Giuseppe and Giuseppina inherited the estate, and, driven by the deep love for the vineyard that guided their father and brother, they manage the estate from a distance. Although today a good part of the harvest is sold, the estate manages to maintain a low production, which stands at around 1500 bottles.
The vines of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are cultivated in contrada Moganazzi (hence the name), Passopisciaro, in Castiglione di Sicilia at about 650 meters in altitude and have an average age of 80 years. These varieties give rise to the prestigious Etna Rosso and Etna Rosato, while the Etna Bianco comes from ancient bush-trained vines of Carricante and Catarratto. The soil has a volcanic composition, made up of basalt and rich in silica and minerals. The wines of Tenute Moganazzi are aged in barriques for at least a year. They are expressions of the volcanic apparatus, pleasantly mineral, with excellent freshness and remarkable elegance-fineness. Deep and rare portraits of Etna!
