Tondini
The family-run wine business Tondini was founded in 2004 in San Leonardo, in Alta Gallura, between Luras and Calangianus, in a region of excellence for Vermentino but also the main Sardinian area for cork. At the helm of the winery is the Tondini family, represented by Orlando and his four children, including Antonio, the family winemaker. The intent of the Tondinis is to capture the strong viticultural vocation of the Gallura territory and convey it in the glass.
The 20 hectares of vineyards cultivated by the Tondini family are mainly reserved for Vermentino, a white grape variety that is the symbol of enological Sardinia, alongside smaller percentages of other native varieties such as Moscato, Cannonau, and Caricagiola, as well as Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Dolcetto. The rows, pruned in Guyot, are located between 300 and 400 meters above sea level, on sandy soils derived from granite disintegration, in a Mediterranean climate characterized by the constant presence of sea breezes and excellent daily temperature excursions in summer. One of the cornerstones of the production philosophy of the the Tondini family is that quality first and foremost comes from the vineyard, and for this reason, the yields in grapes per hectare are very limited. In the winery, they try to accommodate what the territory offers, and for this purpose, they also employ modern technologies such as temperature-controlled steel tanks, essential for preserving the aromatic heritage of the wines during fermentation. Regarding the aging phase, typically the whites rest in steel while the reds mature mostly in oak barrels.
The range of labels produced by the Tondini winery is based on Vermentino, offered in different styles, all characterized by an energetic salty-mineral verve. The selection also includes full-bodied reds, a delightful passito, and the latest novelty: the Classic Method Brut Sparkling Wine ‘Karagnanj’. ‘Karagnanj’ is also the name of the more accessible and immediate Vermentino di Gallura, contrasted with the greater depth and richness of the Vermentino di Gallura Superiore ‘Katala’.
