Tranampelo

The Greek wine reality of Tranampelo is located in the charming Mediterranean context of the Cyclades islands, particularly near the village of Glinado, on Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades islands. The name Tranampelo comes from the Greek “trana ampelia”, which means “strong vines”, a name inspired by the established wine tradition of the area. Behind this project, officially started in 2005, is the family nicknamed “Kaloeros”, the last dedicated to viticulture in the area, which after 50 years decided to revive its wine tradition by adopting a sustainable approach that respects local winemaking practices. Furthermore, Konstantinos Makridimitris, who has revived the craft of his ancestors, embraces a holistic vision based on the exclusion of any waste, which is why he is committed to the processing of other vine products besides wine, such as grape molasses, locally called “petimezi”, pomace brandy, known as “strofilia”, and of course vinegar, called “glykadi”.

The vineyards of the Tranampelo estate are located 120 meters above sea level on sandy-clay volcanic soils, facing north and caressed by the brackish winds of the Cyclades. They also benefit from organic farming and the presence of numerous plant species inside and around the vineyards, such as wild herbs, fruit trees, roses, olive trees, prickly pears, and oleanders. The cultivated grape varieties represent true native varietal pearls, including Potamisi, Aidani, Monemvasia, Assyrtiko, Koundoura, and Haraibraim among the white grapes, and Fokiano, Mandilaria, Mavro Aidani, Mavro Potamisi, and Mavrotragano for the black grapes. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the same containers used for aging on fine lees, thus without the use of woods that would somehow interfere with the unique character of these wines.

The Tranampelo winery creates authentic wine expressions of the Cyclades, salty and marine, full and concentrated, with a strong personality. In particular, two wines are produced, both dry whites: a pure Potamisi and a blend of white and red grapes vinified in white called ‘Odd Blend’.
