Vigneto Altura
Francesco Carfagna is a charismatic artisan and winemaker from the Isola del Giglio, founder of the Vigneto Altura winery. A mathematics teacher, enchanted by the extraordinary beauty of the island, in 1985 he decides to leave his profession to dedicate himself to the life of the fields. Thus, with great determination and courage, he recovers an old abandoned vineyard of Ansonaco, the island's flagship grape, and inaugurates his first artisanal production. Today, the estate, officially founded in 2000, includes 4 hectares of vineyards located in the Mulinaccio area, in the southwest part of the island, and is dedicated, in addition to Ansonaco, to other red grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Grenache, Canaiolo Nero, and Aleatico. Francesco is a winemaker who dedicates himself entirely to the land and has decided to challenge the rugged territory to create nectars that can spontaneously and definitively convey the terroir of origin.
The young vines of Vigneto Altura are located in an extraordinary natural garden, immersed in the unspoiled and Mediterranean landscape of the island. They are cultivated as bush vines, they are terraced on the steep slopes that drop straight into the sea and gaze into the distance at the island of Montecristo. Their roots sink into a sandy and skeleton-rich soil, interspersed with boulders and rocks. In the vineyard, Francesco has decided to adopt a viticulture that greatly respects the environment, banning the use of any chemical and synthetic substances that could disturb the spontaneous course of nature. Only small and justified doses of sulfur and cow manure are tolerated by the winemaker. In the winery, the same approach continues with spontaneous fermentations catalyzed by indigenous yeasts and long macerations on the skins, without the addition of aids and exogenous substances. After a resting period in steel, sometimes with a light passage in wood, they are bottled without clarifications and filtrations.
The wines of Vigneto Altura are invigorating squeezes of sea and Mediterranean scrub, pure and straightforward portraits of the island without corrections and filters. They are characterized by a marine and wild structure, rich in nuances and great concentration. The island in liquid form!
