W. & J. Graham's
W. & J. Graham's is a family-run winery that produces Porto of exceptional quality. Its story spans over two centuries. The two brothers William and John Graham were textile merchants in the city of Porto; in 1820 they accepted 27 barrels of Porto as payment for a debt. Later, the two brothers started a wine trade with their native Scotland and in 1890 began producing wines in the Douro Valley, on the property of Quinta dos Malvedos. Today the winery is run by the Symington family, who bought it in 1970 and personally oversee all aspects of production, from winemaking to bottling.
Graham's owns five mountain vineyards, located in the best wine-growing areas of the Douro region. Much of the wild flora present among the vines has been left intact with the intention of preserving the indigenous biodiversity that, according to Graham's, contributes to the production of wines that are extremely expressive of the territory.
The winery W. & J. Graham's has 7 hectares of vineyard, managed organically, and continues to produce some of its Porto by hand-treading the grapes in stone "lagares", low troughs for crushing. With the scarce availability of labor in the Douro, alongside the traditional "lagares" modern ones also operate. Graham's confirms that it combines the best of tradition with innovative viticulture and winemaking methods. After the harvest, the grapes are allowed to mature for a period in the Douro, subsequently the wines are taken to Graham's Lodge, in Vila Nova de Gaia, where they are left to age slowly in the temperate climate of the Atlantic Ocean.
Graham's is constantly committed to optimizing the quality of the grapes, minimizing intervention in the vineyard and erosion, the latter being a constant concern in mountain vineyards. The favorable climatic conditions and the extreme care with which the family oversees the activities give the wines of the winery W. & J. Graham's a unique style.
