Zena Crown

The American winery Zena Crown is located in Oregon. In the early 1960s, the Willamette Valley began to attract the attention of some winemakers, who sensed the potential of the land for growing Pinot Noir. However, it was only in the following decades that Oregon became a sort of promised land for all producers seeking a terroir that resembled Burgundy. Among the best areas of Willamette Valley, the Eola-Amity Hills are certainly among the best, where the Zena Crown estate is located. The wonderful exposures and the suitable soils have proven ideal for the noble Burgundy grape, which is very demanding from a pedoclimatic point of view.

The Jackson family purchased the Zena Crown estate in 2013, relying on the advice of winemaker Shane Moore, a great connoisseur of the region, with the intent to produce Pinot Noir. From the very first harvests, the estate has demonstrated its extraordinary potential, marking itself among the most interesting domaines in Oregon. The Eola-Amity Hills area is located on the forty-fifth parallel, at the same latitude as Burgundy and today Pinot Noir occupies about ¾ of the vineyard area. The vineyards are mainly located in the hilly area between Salem and Dundee. The Eola-Amity area is located west of Salem, near the Van Duzer valley, a gap in the coastal range, which allows cold air currents from the Pacific Ocean to move inland.

The constant presence of wind favors strong temperature excursions and a slow maturation of the grapes, with small berries and thicker skins. The average temperatures resemble those of Burgundy, although the climate during the grape maturation period is slightly cooler. The soils of the Willamette Valley, on the other hand, have a particular and heterogeneous composition, with volcanic components, soils derived from the uplift of ancient seabeds, and alluvial sediments. The Eola-Amity Hills area is characterized by red soils of volcanic origin, rich in minerals. Zena Crown vinifies each plot separately and produces a range of Pinot Noir labels that perfectly illustrate the nuances of the terroir.
