'MATER MATUTA' CASALE DEL GIGLIO 2017 DESCRIPTION

The "Mater Matuta" by the Casale del Giglio winery is a soft, full-bodied red wine produced in Le Ferriere, in the Latium province of Latina. This label is obtained from a blend of grapes in which Syrah, predominantly, joins Petit Verdot in a combination that gives complexity and great structure respectively. These international varieties have adapted perfectly to the context of Agro Pontino, whose microclimate is favourably influenced by the breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The winery is one of the most renowned and most invested in viticulture in the Latium region, today owning no less than 164 hectares of vineyards managed with great care and attention to continuous experimentation.

The red wine "Mater Matuta" Casale del Giglio, named after the goddess of the dawn, an ancient Italic divinity protector of nascent life and fertility, is produced from carefully selected grapes harvested at the time of their optimum ripeness, sometimes slightly dried for the Syrah. After destemming in the cellar, the grapes undergo separate alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel containers for a period of around 18-20 days, using the submerged cap maceration technique for the Syrah and by means of fulling machines that amplify extraction from the skins for the Petit Verdot. This is followed by racking and subsequent ageing of the wine in new French oak barriques for 22-24 months, before blending of the two varieties and final bottling. Maturation in the bottle follows for a further 10 months before the 'Mater Matuta' is ready to be marketed.

Casale del Giglio's "Mater Matuta" presents itself with a dark, dense ruby red colour to the eye, embraces by slightly purple nuances. On the nose are intense hints of ripe fruit, including morello cherry, blackberry and plum, floral notes of violets and dried flowers, spicy hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, coffee, balsamic hints and a hint of Mediterranean herbs, including coriander. In the mouth, it is full, enveloping and rich, characterised by a well-integrated tannic texture, beautiful freshness and a long, opulent finish. This red from the Casale del Giglio winery is a specimen in its own right, truly special and unique, capable of seduction.
