Atlantic Galician Spirits
The Spanish brand Atlantic Galician Spirits specializes in the production of fine spirits made from typical ingredients of Galicia, created with the aim of condensing the character of this beautiful region at the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. This young distillery originated in 2012 in the city of Santiago de Compostela, a famous stop for pilgrims, from the project of partners and friends Xoan Torres Cannas, Juan Luis Mendez, and Joseph Alvela, the first a sommelier, the second an oenologist, and the third a master distiller. The idea was born while the three friends enjoyed a plate of octopus, a typical dish of Galicia, starting to imagine an unconventional gin made with local ingredients.
The botanicals used for the production of Atlantic Galician Spirits' distillates mainly come from the Galician territory, strongly influenced by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the constant presence of a fierce wind, locally known as “vento de nordesìa”. For example, the Gin Nordés is produced from a base obtained by distilling Albariño wine, a specialty of the Rías. Additionally, the gin production uses herbs gathered in Galicia such as sage, peppermint, eucalyptus, bay leaf, lemon verbena, and samphire, combined with 5 botanicals from other places, namely ginger, hibiscus, black tea, cardamom, and the essential juniper. All ingredients are left to macerate separately in a slow manner before distillation, always seeking the perfect balance between the aromatic character of each botanical.
From these premises, the products of Atlantic Galician Spirits take shape, distillates capable of expressing the Atlantic soul of Galicia, the result of an artisanal and unconventional production approach. Focusing on Gin Nordés, the flagship label of Atlantic Galician Spirits, it surprises with its marked freshness and exquisite aromaticity, establishing itself as a gin with a unique personality, also highlighted by the bottle design reminiscent of the traditional porcelain products made in Sargadelos, Galicia.
