A Region of Great Traditions

The landscape of the Trentino is firmly linked to the vines, shaping its profile with neat rows. Vines have been grown here for centuries. They have been cultivated since Roman colonisation and the tradition has been kept alive in the following centuries by the numerous monasteries in the region. Vineyards are a familiar feature and can be found both at the bottom of the valley and on the steep slopes that climb towards the mountain peaks. It is an ancient viticulture, linked to the traditions of the area. The production network is, in fact, very varied and heterogeneous, with the presence of historic cooperative wineries, important producers and small winemakers who still work with passion and craftsmanship. The mountainous terrain has maintained an intimate and personal relationship with the vineyard, which requires special attention and many hours of work. Besides the area of the Piana Rotaliana, the vineyards are cultivated on steep slopes or on terraces with dry stone walls, which require constant maintenance, resulting in heroic viticulture. The unbreakable relationship between man and the mountains has ensured that over the centuries a sincere love for the land and its traditions has been preserved. The typical Trentino wines perfectly reflect this feeling and are authentic and sincere expressions of an extraordinary terroir.

The Classic Method

The Classic Method is one of the most important aspects of the Trentino region and is constantly growing, both in terms of quality and quantity. Around 60 companies produce Trento DOC sparkling wines, with an annual production of almost 10 million bottles. The famous 'mountain bubblies' are now a well established example of Italian sparkling wine production. Trento DOC is a wine with strong territorial features, authentically representing the splendid area in front of the famous peaks of the Dolomites. The cultivated area covers a total of around 800 hectares and the vines climb up to 900 metres, on the slopes of the Adige, Cembra, Lagarina and Sugana Valleys. Indeed, the Trentino region has proved to be very suitable for the production of Classic Method sparkling wines. The mountainous conformation of the region makes it possible to cultivate the vines at high altitudes, taking advantage of a cool, breezy climate with wide temperature ranges between day and night. The soils are mainly made up of limestone matrix rocks, which are ideal for growing Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Meunier grapes. The successful combination of climate and soil makes it possible to produce very fresh and fragrant base wines for the production of an elegant and refined Classic Method. The production has now more than a century of history and in recent decades has found a very precise personality. Most of the wines contain a high proportion of Chardonnay and are characterised by a taut, vertical profile, with delicately floral and fruity aromas, and a remarkable freshness and sapidity.

A Land of Whites and Reds

In addition to great Classic Method Trento DOC sparkling wines, Trentino is one of the Italian regions that boasts a production of excellent white and red wines. The mild and always very breezy climate, the presence of a great variety of soils, altitudes and exposures, in fact, provide ideal conditions for many varieties of both white and red grapes. The area of the Piana Rotaliana, created over thousands of years by alluvial sediments transported by the turbulent course of the Adige river and the Noce torrent, is characterised by loose, shallow soils, rich in pebbles, silt and sand. This area of the valley floor is the natural habitat of Teroldego, which is the most famous native red grape variety in the region. The plain covers an area of approximately 400 hectares, completely planted with vines, and produces intense and elegant reds. There are also some vineyards planted with the great Bordeaux varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the indigenous Marzemino or Lagrein. In the hilly areas and on the first hills that climb towards the mountains, there is also room for white varieties such as Nosiola, cultivated primarily in the Valle dei Laghi and on the Lavis hills, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon and Muller Thurgau. This mosaic of vineyards, thanks to the excellent soil and climate conditions, produces wines of high quality, with intense aromas and great mineral freshness.
